Manx Tomkinson came into existence at the start of 2017, following a merger between two well-known names in flooring; Manx Carpets and Mr Tomkinson. Manx Carpets originated on the Isle of Man midway through the 20th century. The company relocated manufacturing into mainland Great Britain, operating from facilities in Blackburn (Lancashire).
In 2003, Manx Carpets became part of Headlam PLC.
The Tomkinson family’s connection with carpet production goes as far back as the mid-1800s. Michael Tomkinson, partnering with the Adam family, founded Tomkinson & Adam Ltd in Kidderminster during 1869.
Within a decade, the business was producing woven Axminster carpets.
The two families remained in partnership until 1926 when they went a separate way but both continued in the carpet trade. Over the course of four generations, the Tomkinson family remained actively involved in the business with the family link finishing in 1998 when Richard Pugh-Cook departed following the company’s sale to Gaskell PLC.
In 2005, after Gaskell entered receivership, the Mr Tomkinson brand was acquired by Headlam plc, Europe’s largest flooring distributor.
Growth and Today
Under Headlam’s ownership, Mr Tomkinson was revitalised and became a prominent name in the UK residential carpet sector once again. By sourcing products both domestically and internationally, the brand now offers an extensive selection of affordable, quality carpets.
Following the merger with Manx Carpets, Manx Tomkinson expanded even further to broaden its product portfolio and increase its number of retailer partnerships while still providing a comprehensive range of carpet choices. Today, the company is well-positioned as a complete solution provider helping UK homeowners, and UK retailers, alike.
