Carpets were originally made in the Devon market town of Axminster in 1755. The term ‘axminster’ has, in the past, been mostly associated with heavily patterned carpets, some of which enjoy lasting popularity in our Elegance and Classic collections. However, our Contemporary ranges reflect a modern take on patterned carpet, with designs that offer a subtle and graceful approach to design and colour. Our Plain and Textured carpets give a variety of alternatives to conventional Axminster Carpet patterns offering a wide diversity of colours, styles and yarn types.

Wool is the most popular fibre used in creating a quality carpet. A great renewable resource, the production of wool is both ecologically and environmentally friendly. It is exceptionally well suited for use in carpet production because it has excellent natural resilient characteristics not found in any other fibre, which help improve its long term appearance.

Wool and wool-rich carpets are resistant to combustion, will reduce noise pollution, provide excellent thermal insulation, but above all create a feeling of comfort and luxury in your home.

As the yarn is the most important part of the carpet, we insist on spinning and dyeing it ourselves, not far from the carpet factory, on the edge of Dartmoor. The sheep on Dartmoor have always provided us with a substantial supply of hardwearing yarn suitable for the production of our carpets, while at the same time helping to keep our carbon footprint one of the lowest in the industry. Our spinning mill is one of the finest in Europe and supplies all the yarn for the whole Axminster Carpets Group. We are the only UK carpet manufacturer to handle every aspect of yarn production in house, and we are proud of our ‘Homespun Yarn’ tradition.
